In a surprise decision, Rock County Judge James Daley dismisses a first-degree intentional homicide case. The twist came today when the defendant, 32-year-old Barquis D. McKnight demanded the court keep to the schedule of his speedy trial demand, even though his attorney would not be available. Daley was not comfortable with allowing McKnight to defend himself. So, Daley dismissed the case, but allowed McKnight to remain in custody so he could be rearrested. Now, after almost four months in custody, McKnight’s lawyer says the process will last even longer. McKnight is accused in the shooting death of 28-year-old Eddie L. Jones of Markham, Illinois outside a home on South Franklin Street the night of May 28th. His attorney has already filed a motion claiming self defense, and believes the case can be concluded with a plea agreement.
