Summer school isn’t what it used to be. Janesville School District spokesman Patrick Gasper says most courses are no longer remedial, and that’s helping more students bridge a summer vacation achievement gap. Gasper says students are able to continue learning June through August. He suspects families appreciate the enrichment aspect of many of today’s summer school offerings. Summer school enrollment has been steadily increasing over the last several years, climbing from fewer than 2800 students in 2011, to almost 3600 this year. The school board will be hearing a report on the program’s progress when it meets Tuesday night.
