The School District of Beloit is excited to announce that the AVID program this fall at Beloit Memorial High School. AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and careers. Established more than 35 years ago, today the program impacts nearly 1.5 million students. Beloit Memorial joins almost 6,000 other AVID schools across the country that are dedicated to providing real college opportunities for all students.
AVID-trained educators provide academic and social support to influence the learning and behavior of their students. They foster a school-wide college and career readiness culture that exposes students to rigorous coursework and holds them accountable to the highest standards so they can excel. There are currently 48 freshmen who are a part of the initial AVID class.
AVID CEO Dr. Sandy Husk remarked, “When teachers are engaged, students succeed. We see this through raised expectations of teachers for their students. We see this through increased confidence in our students. We see this in a positive cultural change on each campus where AVID is implemented.”
The teachers create a systematic framework that teaches academic success, provides intensive support with tutorials and strong student/teacher relationships, creates a positive peer group for students, and develops a sense of hope for personal achievement.
“The focus of AVID is to incorporate engaging learning strategies within all courses and to help students organize and self-assess their learning in order to be college and career ready. We are excited about the impact this will have on our students,” says Jaymee Thompson, Beloit Memorial High School assistant principal.
