Hunters encouraged to have deer tested for Chronic Wasting Disease

 In cooperation with local businesses, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources staff collect deer heads for chronic wasting disease surveillance testing within Richland, Grant, Sauk, Iowa, Lafayette, Columbia, Dane, Green and Rock counties during the 2017 archery, crossbow and gun hunting seasons.
Hunter service testing is available throughout CWD-affected counties in southern Wisconsin. If you harvest an adult deer within those counties, please consider submitting a sample from any harvested adult deer for CWD testing.
Deer can be sampled for CWD at the following locations:

Dane County
  • Stoddard’s Country Grove Market, Cottage Grove;
  • Village Market, Waunakee;
  • Uncle Jimmy’s Deer Processing, Blue Mound;
  • 24-hour DNR self-service kiosk East side of building North of entrance to Norslein’s Woodworks, Black Earth;
  • 24-hour DNR self-service kiosk behind the DNR Service Center, Fitchburg; and
  • DNR Wildlife Management Office by appointment only, Julie Widholm 608-516-3895.
Green County
  • Sugar River Taxidermy, Monticello.
Rock County
  • Nature’s Touch Taxidermy, Janesville.
Wisconsin’s citizens and cooperators have played a key role in CWD sampling efforts in Wisconsin, and department staff would like to thank all participants and collection cooperators for their continued efforts.

Sick deer reports
Samples will also be collected from sick adult deer exhibiting signs of CWD in all counties. Everyone is encouraged to keep an eye out for deer that appear sick or are otherwise acting abnormally so biologists can assess if symptoms are consistent with CWD infection. Sick deer can be reported to your local DNR office.
