A group of 40 students, marching from Madison to call attention to gun violence, were warmly greeted by a crowd in the hundreds at Janesville’s Traxler park Wednesday. The students are responding to a seemingly never endless number of school shootings. Among them, Craig High School Senior Maria Mendoza, who specifically called out House Speaker Paul Ryan for his inaction on the issue. The students were from around Wisconsin, and used the national media attention to challenge youth in other state’s to stage similar “50 Miles More” protests. Along with the threat of their age group voting in the near future, the young activists asked for all weapons of war be banned from civilian society, accessories that make weapons automatic be banned, and the minimum age of gun ownership be raised to 21, along with background checks on all sales.
