The City of Janesville and the union representing it’s firefighters may have come to an agreement on a contract, but neither side appears very happy.
A statement from Firefighters Local 580 that says “we will never forget that Mark Freitag and Ryan McCue held a gun to the skulls of our retirees, our spouses, children, and us, with a bullet marked health insurance.”
City Manager Mark Freitag says he’s disappointed in how union members conducted themselves, turning a business matter into something personal.
The contention over contract negotiations arose around what amounted to amenities enjoyed by by members of the firefighters union, including the ability to wash personal vehicles while on the clock. Firefighters Local 580 filed a grievance against the City but eventually dropped it when City officials offered up a new heath insurance policy that members of the fire union deemed inferior.
