Janesville City Council approves sale of land for downtown affordable housing development

The Janesville City Council moved forward with a development plan for affordable housing in the downtown area.
They voted Monday night to sell three lots to Commonwealth Holdings for one dollar each to facilitate the potential development of a 62-unit housing complex.
The company will now apply for tax credits through the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority, which is expected to make a decision on the matter in the spring.
Then the development project would return to the Janesville Plan Commission to approve a potential conditional use permit.
If Commonwealth is unable to get the project off the ground, the three parcels of land will return to the city’s control.
