Beloit City Council opts not to amend zoning for new apartment complex

An Illinois developer won’t be able to build apartments on the land he bought on Prairie Avenue in Beloit.
Andrew Sarris bought the lot that holds the city’s former Army Reserve Facility, and he needed the land rezoned to build multi-family rental units.
At the city council meeting Monday night, members opted to let the motion for an amendment die without a vote.
Beloit City Manager Lori Curtis-Luther says the city recommended a denial of the plan, despite the plan commission recommending approval by a 4-to-3 vote.
Members of the public spoke out against the proposed apartments during a public hearing session at the meeting.
