State Department of Transportation Secretary-designee Craig Thompson doesn’t want the I-39/90 expansion project around Janesville to be delayed.

Thompson says he won’t rebid the project, which is expected to cost around 7 percent more than the state originally thought.

State engineers told him they likely wouldn’t be able to lower the costs by opening up the bidding process again, and the delays it would cause would be disruptive to business.

Thompson says the specific corridor in question is not only important to Rock County, but commerce into the entire state.

He believes Governor Tony Evers will support his decision to forge ahead with the Janesville segment and likely decide whether to give final approval within the next week.
