The Janesville City Council won’t be making any changes to the public comment portion of their meetings — yet.

During their meeting Monday night, they voted to table the discussion over limiting the scope of comments.

A handful of Janesville residents spoke out against the idea during the public hearing for the agenda item.

Assistant to the City Manager Maggie Darr says the city is not legally required to have the public comment portion of their meetings, which is separate from regular public hearings on specific agenda items.

Council member Tom Wolfe says the idea is not to stifle discussion but to find ways to make that portion of the meeting more productive for everyone.

The council will meet with the city attorney to discuss potential future changes at a study session later this year.
