Edgerton High School starting school year with no cell phones in class

Edgerton High School students returning Thursday won’t have their cell phones with them in class under a new policy the school is implementing this year.

Principal Mark Coombs says kids will have to keep their phones in their lockers or risk having them confiscated for the day.

Their previous “out of sight, out of mind” policy just asked students to keep the phones off and in their pockets.

Coombs believes the cell phone policy will cut down on distractions for students and increase their instructional time.

He looked at similar policies at Evansville and Jefferson High Schools to shape the change in Edgerton.

He also consulted with Edgerton Police Chief Robert Kowalski to ensure there would be no safety concerns for students in the event of an emergency.

Coombs says if parents need to get ahold of their student during the day, they can always contact the school office to reach them — the way they did before students carried cell phones.

He plans to give the students the first five days of class to get used to the new policy before stepping up to full enforcement next week.
