Movie theaters could soon be on the list of businesses the City of Janesville allows to sell alcohol.
City clerk Dave Godek says the city council will conduct first reading of an ordinance change Monday night that was requested by officials at Wildwood Theaters Movies 16 in Janesville.
Currently, the city’s separation ordinance only allows certain businesses to sell alcohol and conduct other business, like restaurants and bowling alleys. The ordinance change would add movie theaters to the list of exceptions.
In May, the local theater came to the city council expressed interest in serving alcohol but were unable to even apply for a liquor license.
On Monday, the city council will refer the ordinance change to the Alcohol License Advisory Committee, which will later vote on whether or not to recommend approve by the council at a future meeting.
Even if the ordinance change passes, the movie theater would still need to apply for and be granted a liquor license before they could start serving alcohol.
