The teenage driver who crashed and killed an elderly woman on Milton Avenue last October avoids prison time.
18-year-old Ty Matijevich pleaded guilty to homicide by negligent use of a vehicle Friday in Rock County Court.
Judge John Wood accepted a joint recommendation from the attorney Jack Hoag and assistant district attorney Kate Buker and sentenced Matijevich to five years of probation and one year of conditional jail time.
He will also be required to serve 100 hours of community service in each of the five years of his probation.
Buker said the black box from Matijevich’s vehicle showed he reached speeds of 80 miles per hour before he crashed into the vehicle driven by 74-year-old Merilyn Mitchell, who was turning left into the Janesville Mall on Milton Avenue.
Members of Mitchell’s family were in court for the plea/sentencing hearing, and they expressed forgiveness to Matijevich.
