The operator of a pair of Janesville gas stations is accused of using bank account information belonging to the Libyan Embassy to pay taxes on his businesses.

According to an indictment filed Thursday, 48-year-old Ahmad Kanan of Madison is charged with one count of access device fraud and one count of attempted device fraud.

The state’s affidavit accuses Kanan of using the Libyan Embassy’s bank account to pay sales and use taxes on the two Janesville gas stations on three separate occasions in 2017 totaling over $250,000.

The embassy’s bank account is used to fund educational expenses for Libyan students in the United States, according to the affidavit.

Federal agents searched Kanan’s home and businesses last December and found the account information on his devices.

Court records show his wife as a majority owner of a BP gas station and Clark gas station in Janesville, and the documents indicate he ran the businesses.

Kanan faces up to 10 years in prison on each count.
