Psychologist thinks Janesville assault suspect is faking mental health condition

A 58-year-old Janesville man accused of shooting his girlfriend multiple times and beating two other family members in April of 2018 may be no closer to answering to his charges following his fourth competency hearing in Rock County Court.
In August Judge Barbara McCrory found Dennis J. McNeal not competent to stand trial and ordered him committed to a mental health institution for treatment. At the time a mental health evaluation that was provided to the court found that McNeal could regain the ability to assist in his own defense with proper treatment.
At a follow up competency hearing Thursday a psychologist at Mendota testified that McNeal was competent to stand trial and that she believed that he was faking symptoms such as hearing voices and hallucinations.
McNeal’s attorney Joshua Klaff asked the court permission to have another mental health evaluation by a different doctor.
Judge Barbara McCrory granted the request and set another court date for November 26th at 9:00 a.m.
