The third day of the homicide trial against 38-year-old Jacob Davenport reveals more details of the police investigation into the shooting death of 28-year-old James Tomten.
Beloit police detective Eric Schoonover testified Wednesday about the evidence that led them to suspect Davenport was involved in the incident, which included messages to family members about a situation going bad in Beloit.
Police have surveillance video of a blurry subject who some witnesses believe was Davenport leaving the vehicle where the shooting occurred.
He’s charged with first-degree intentional homicide.
The prosecution played a recording of detective Schoonover’s first phone contact with Davenport, who relocated to Texas soon after the date of the incident.
After police filed a warrant for Davenport’s arrest, he called and left a profanity-laced voicemail on Schoonover’s phone.
The defendant’s cousin also testified that Davenport did not attend his own uncle’s funeral soon after the shooting, despite having a close relationship with the uncle.
The jury trial is expected to run through the end of the week.
