A local non-profit will receive a little extra money this holiday season thanks to a court ruling against a Whitewater man sentenced on a drug charge.
During the Wednesday sentencing of 22-year-old Yovani Ramirez-Mendoza, Rock County Judge John Wood ruled that the money seized during the defendant’s arrest would be donated to ECHO in Janesville.
Ramirez-Mendoza pleaded guilty to a charge of possession with intent to deliver THC and was sentenced to six years of probation with one year of conditional jail time with work-release privileges.
Assistant District Attorney Kate Buker said Ramirez-Mendoza was arrested with 20 pounds of marijuana and over $5,000 in cash in 2018. She recommended ECHO as the recipient of the forfeited cash, and defense attorney Anthony Flitcroft agreed.
