A five-year prison sentence may not be the biggest punishment a Clinton teen is facing for his role in a shooting stemming from a February drug deal.
Rock County Judge Karl Hanson said 19-year-old Jesus Rangel Silva was brought into the United States as a toddler and will likely be deported for his conviction on a second-degree reckless injury charge.
Hanson handed down the five-year prison sentence Wednesday afternoon, to be followed by five years of extended supervision. He said the deportation would likely occur immediately following the prison term.
Rangel Silva was accused of shooting a Janesville woman in the shoulder after she and her accomplices attacked and robbed him after coming to purchase marijuana from him. They face separate charges for their involvement in the incident.
Assistant District Attorney Gerald Urbik argued Rangel Silva’s actions went beyond self-defense, in part because of conflicting accounts of how many shots he fired at the victim’s vehicle.
Defense attorney Douglas Phebus made the case that the deportation would be sufficient enough punishment for the teenager, but Judge Hanson said it would send the wrong message to not impose a prison sentence for the crime.
