Beloit teachers have lingering concerns over educator rating system

The School District of Beloit’s educator rating system is leaving some teachers uneasy about how they’re being evaluated.
The Beloit School Board’s Oversight and Finance Committee met with members of the Beloit Education Association to hear their concerns.
School board member Kyle Larsen said the board asked the committee to find out more about the issue “after it got out that the rating system existed.”
The district says the rating system is for administrators and instructional coaches to help teachers improve through professional development.
Representatives from the union told the committee some teachers are fearful that their rating will be tied to their job security as the district explores grade reconfiguration for the next school year.
The BEA is trying to alleviate their concerns, noting that principals have always been keeping an eye on how teachers performing, even if it wasn’t previously recorded in this way.
Under the educator rating system, staff members are assigned a score of one, two or three, but teachers say they don’t know how they are being rated.
Superintendent Stanley Munro said the state Department of Instruction’s Educator Effectiveness system in the only form of evaluation they use.
