State attorney general lauds Rock County sexual assault conviction

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul is taking notice of a cold case Rock County sexual assault.
He issued a statement Wednesday noting the conviction of 43-year-old Jason A. Smith of Beloit, who pleaded no contest to two counts of second-degree sexual assault of a child.
Smith was accused of attacking a 13-year-old Beloit girl in an alley back in 2000, and Kaul said the sexual assault kit was tested as part of his Wisconsin Sexual Assault Kit Initiative in 2018.
The attorney general said this is the fourth conviction in Wisconsin stemming from the testing of backlogged sexual assault kits.
Rock County Judge Karl Hanson will determine Smith’s sentence on April 9. Smith is already serving a 50-year prison sentence from previous sexual assault convictions.
