Janesville police are forcing two Janesville businesses to close under Governor Tony Evers’ safer-at-home order.

Deputy Chief Terry Sheridan said officers were making contact with Hobby Lobby and Smokers World in Janesville and directing them to cease operations.

Sheridan said the businesses were not deemed essential under the governor’s order, but police received reports of both stores still operating at recently as Wednesday.

The safer-at-home order gives police the authority to enforce the closure under state statute 252.25, which has a maximum punishment of 30 days in jail or a $250 fine or both.

Sheridan said officers will make contact with the business owners and ask for compliance, but the department is prepared to issue citations or make arrests if necessary.

Janesville police have emphasized education over enforcement as the rules have changed so quickly in a short period of time.
