No longer stuck in Peru, Janesville woman returns home

A local woman is back in Janesville after being stranded in Peru due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Maddie Schroeder was finishing up a six-month internship in March when the country closed its borders and all flights were cancelled.
She had no way out and limited contact with the U.S. Embassy, so she turned to her local congressional leaders for help.
After some initial direction from U.S. Representative Bryan Steil’s office on March 18 and 19, Schroeder was still left with few answers on how she was supposed to get back to Wisconsin.
Steil’s office issued a news release Wednesday afternoon, announcing the congressman spoke with State Department officials about Schroeder’s situation on Sunday, and she was able to board a flight home on Tuesday.
“I am excited to announced that Maddie has returned safely home to Janesville,” Steil said in a statement. ” I’m relieved that Maddie’s ordeal is over. I encourage anyone to reach out to my office who needs assistance with the federal government during these challenging times.”
She was one of more than 1,000 U.S. citizens trapped Peru during the health crisis.
