Rock County health providers are reporting their capacity and projections to emphasize the need for social distancing and reducing the spread of COVID-19.
The public health department said the county has a combined 260 hospital beds and 37 intensive care units total between Mercy Health, Beloit Health System, SSM Health St. Mary’s Janesville, and Edgerton Hospital.
As of Tuesday, 151 of those beds are filled, along with 17 patients in ICU.
Those numbers include non-COVID-19 patients too, and the local hospitals say they currently have 32 ventilators available.
Rock County’s projections show over 1,000 hospital beds and 312 ICUs could be needed if local residents don’t comply with Governor Tony Evers’ safer-at-home order.
Even if half of the population stayed home, health officials project that the local hospitals still wouldn’t have room for all of the patients, but their numbers do not include medical surge capabilities.
Rock County is up to 37 positive cases of COVID-19, with 824 negative tests and two deaths as of Tuesday afternoon.
