The COVID-19 pandemic is difficult for everyone to deal with, so an Evansville non-profit is hoping to help build mental health skills in its community.

Building A Safer Evansville is holding free Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) Suicide Prevention Training sessions for the public on Friday and Monday.

BASE Executive Director Jennifer Braun said the program teaches participants the steps to prevent suicide and provide hope for others.

On March 30, an Evansville Community School District student took his own life, but Braun said the training was not a response to that tragic incident.

The sessions were previously scheduled before Governor Tony Evers issued his safer-at-home order and limited public gatherings. This will be the first time they’ve held the trainings virtually to follow social distancing.

Participants are required to be 18 years or older and need to register in advance for the ZOOM meetings.
