Janesville Police Department K-9 Fred is a fighter.
The German Shepard/Belgian Malinois mix has already beaten cancer twice, and he’s gearing up for his third battle with the disease.
Veterinarians detected a swollen lymph node in his left hind leg, which turned out to be cancerous, and the K-9 had the growth removed Wednesday.
His handler first noticed a limp in Fred’s walk last June, and they discovered melanoma in a pad on his paw. That spread to his entire third toe, which veterinarians removed last October.
Police hope the removal of the lymph node and chemotherapy to follow get all of the cancer out of his system, and officers hope he can be back on duty in a few weeks.
