Spring athletics coaches in both the School District of Janesville and School District of Beloit will receive a portion of their coaching salaries after the two districts changed their minds Tuesday night.

Beloit’s administrative team announced it will pay its high school head coaches 40 percent of their wages, and assistant coaches will receive 25 percent of their pay.

“Our intent was always to revisit how our spring coaching staff should be compensated,” interim Beloit superintendent Sue Green said in a statement. “We continued our earlier discussions with our leadership team and wanted to be sure that we were balancing the importance of fiscal responsibility and the acknowledgment that our coaches are an important part of our high school student’s experience and social development.”

The Janesville school board also voted Tuesday night to pay its coaches 50 percent of their salaries. Board member Kevin Murray proposed paying them in full, but the board compromised at a half rate. Greg Ardry was the only board member who voted against the resolution.

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association cancelled the spring athletics season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but many school districts in the area agreed to still pay their coaches in full.
