Neighbors ask Janesville City Council to again restrict outdoor music at Hammy’s Roadside Bar

For the fourth time in the last five years, a group of neighbors who live behind Hammy’s Roadside Bar in Janesville are asking the city council to restrict outdoor music at the south side tavern.

The council is holding a rare joint-meeting with the city’s Alcohol License Advisory Committee Tuesday morning to conduct a public hearing on the issue.

Last July, the owners of the bar reached an agreement with the neighbors to allow Hammy’s to have live, outdoor music every-other weekend between Memorial Day and Labor Day, from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays and from noon to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays.

City Clerk-Treasurer Dave Godek said every establishment with a permit for outdoor music has some sort of restrictions on what time music can be played, but he was not aware of any other venue that has agreed to restricted days like Hammy’s.

A neighbor submitted another noise complaint for the outdoor music last month, but Janesville police have not issued any citations related to those complaints at Hammy’s since at least 2016.

Godek said the joint meeting and public hearing will still be conducted virtually for public health concerns, but the group of neighbors and the owners of Hammy’s will be part of the video conference.

Other members of the community can submit public hearing comments in written form, due by 10:00 a.m. Monday morning.
