Milton High School students will be allowed to participate in winter sports.
The school board voted to give Superintendent Rich Dahman the authority to move forward with his administration’s plan for winter athletics during the COVID-19 pandemic, despite the Rock County Public Health Department recommending against it.
The board approval came with the condition that if the high school has to pivot to virtual learning due to high COVID-19 cases, the athletics will also be suspended during that time.
Milton High School is currently conducting online learning through at the least the end of the week due to a spike in coronavirus exposure.
Dahman indicated that parents will sign a waiver for their students to participate, but the districts attorneys told him that does not completely protect them from a potential lawsuit for liability.
Multiple school board members said they want to see if winter athletics can work safely, rather than forbidding it without at least trying first.
The Evansville school board recently voted to allow winter sports, and the Janesville school board is scheduled to make its decision Tuesday night.
