A proposal floated by the Governor in his budget address, to allow municipalities to utilize a half-percent sales tax, could benefit Janesville. City Manager Mark Freitag says Janesville is a regional shopping hub and could generate up to $9-million dollars a year for things like roadwork and emergency services. Freitag says staff has already considered the idea and determined it would not discourage business investment. If the measure is approved by the legislature, it would still need referendum approval by local voters.
