The statewide mask mandate is no longer in effect, but masks are still required in Rock County.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court voted Wednesday to strike down Governor Tony Evers’ emergency order effective immediately.
When Evers’ previous mask mandate was removed by the state legislature, the Rock County Public Health Department issued its own mask mandate on February 4, which remains in effect through May 5.
The City of Beloit also has an ongoing COVID-19 emergency declaration that requires masks to be worn indoors within city limits.
The state supreme court ruled that Governor Evers acted beyond his powers to institute additional emergency orders after the initial 60 day window.
“The question in this case is not whether the Governor acted wisely; it is whether he acted lawfully,” Justice Brian Hagedorn said. “We conclude he did not.”
