The Janesville Parks Division plans to conduct its annual spring prairie management burning program when weather conditions are conducive to burning. The recent mild weather has allowed the City to start its burning program. Burning operations will cease by the end of April.
Burning prairies and similar natural areas aid in the removal of undesirable trees and plants while encouraging new prairie plants to establish.
Burning will take place on selected public prairie and natural areas in City parks and greenbelts. There are over 75 such prairies that are managed through burning. Favorable low wind and moisture conditions are necessary for adequate burning; therefore, exact scheduling of burn locations is not available.
The Janesville Fire Department and Rock County Communications are aware of the program. Please contact the Parks Division with any questions at (608) 755-3025.
