Janesville looks to share road repair costs between residents, businesses

The Janesville City Council is tapping into multiple funding sources to pay for road repairs moving forward.
The city is rolling out a plan to increase the wheel tax and also appropriate 100 percent of curb and gutter costs to the stormwater utility bills for properties.
Finance Director Dave Godek said increasing the wheel tax from $20 to $40 will more directly burden individual citizens, while the stormwater appropriation will be more costly to businesses.
Under the proposed change, the average non-residential-property will see its bill go up just over $350 dollars a year, while the average resident will pay around $20 extra, Godek said.
Both changes would go into effect January 1, 2022 to help the city reduce its borrowing and interest costs to pay for fixing the streets.
