Hedberg Public Library hosts story slam and open mic

hedberg-9

Hedberg Public Library is hosting a Story Slam Workshop on Saturday, November 13 from 2-4 p.m. for teens and adults presented by Sarah Beth Nelson, director of the Library Media program at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Participants of the workshop will learn what story slams are, where to find them, and how to craft a five minute personal story to take to a slam, a job interview, or any social event. Participants can bring an idea for a personal story to work on, or find inspiration during the workshop.

Registration is required and space is limited for this free workshop held in the library’s Program Room.

The library will also host an Open Mic on Saturday, November 20 at 2 p.m., facilitated by Sarah Beth Nelson, which is the perfect opportunity to showcase the story participants crafted in the Story Slam Workshop.

Didn’t attend the workshop but still want to share? Teens and adults are invited to bring their personal story, folk tale, poetry, music, or other talent for a 5 to 10 minute performance. Content must be appropriate for a mixed-aged audience.

No registration is required for the Open Mic event, which will be held in the library’s Woodruff Room.

In addition to training future librarians at UW-Whitewater, Sarah Beth Nelson researches the American reality (true, personal, edgy) storytelling movement. Sarah Beth performs in fringes, festivals, and open mic and slam events, such as The Moth (in various cities), Atlanta’s Carapace, and Milwaukee’s Ex Fabula.
