Medical Examiner identifies man who died from medical emergency unrelated to fire last week

An elderly Janesville man who had a medical emergency while firefighters responded to his home for a residential fire is identified by the Rock county Medical Examiner.
Firefighters were called to the 37-hundred block of Bryn-Mawr Drive about 6:30 last Thursday night for a chimney fire.
Flames were showing through the roof when firefighters arrived.
In a news release, the Janesville Fire Department said 76-year-old William E. Herkert experienced a medical emergency unrelated to the fire and was treated on the scene before being transported to the hospital.
The Medical Examiner says Herkert died at the hospital and results of the autopsy examination are pending further studies.
Herkert’s death remains under investigation.
