Downed power lines are being blamed as the possible cause of a residential fire on Beloit’s near north side. Officials say firefighters were first called to the 1700 block of Hemlock Street just after noon Thursday for a report of downed wires. While on the scene, residents of a nearby home safely evacuated and reported smoke in their basement. Authorities say the fire caused about $15000 damage and displaced the family. The Red Cross is helping out.
