A competency evaluation is ordered for the 29-year-old Beloit man who was shot by a Beloit Police Officer as he lunged for her gun.

Jorge Bautista-Almaraz is charged with criminal damage to property and attempting to disarm a police officer in connection with the incident in December of 2021.

Bautista-Almaraz appeared in Rock County Court Wednesday where he changed his plea from not guilty to not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. Judge Karl Hanson ordered that a competency evaluation be completed within 30 days.

The officer who shot Bautista-Almaraz was cleared of any wrongdoing.
