The Lustig Park playground is temporarily closed due to an invasive, non-native insect infestation. According to a news release, the park is infested with Spongy Moths which possess tiny hairs in their caterpillar stage carrying a histamine which can cause skin irritation and rashes. As a preventative measure, the playground will be closed until the adult moth stage of the insect’s life cycle as this development typically occurs late June or early July. The City of Janesville Parks Division actively works to eradicate the Spongy Moth infestation at Lustig Park. The insects can also cause significant damage to oak trees.
