Local animal rescue groups are turning away cats due to an outbreak of a deadly contagious virus, similar to parvo in dogs.
Dr. Michael Hotchkiss with Janesville Veterinary Clinic says Panleukopenia is highly contagious and can be fatal for kittens and older cats.
Hotchkiss says the best thing pet owners can do is to vaccinate their cats and keep them indoors.
According to a Facebook post , the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin will intake and vaccinate stray cats and then send them to foster homes, or back home with the finder for five days.
If no foster is available and the finder can’t take the cat for five days, it would be turned away.
Janesville Police say for the time-being they wont be picking up stray cats.
As of air time, the Humane Society declined a request for comment, Friends of Noah and Kadlec Ranch Rescue did not respond.
