The Parkview School District’s failed operation referendum last week could be a lesson for the School District of Janesville.
The approval of an operational referendum for a school district is the start of what can become a vicious cycle.
School District of Janesville Superintendent Mark Holzman says when the funding runs out, districts are left with the choice of either making cuts, or asking voters to approve another referendum.
Holzman says 80 percent of the district’s budget is staff.
Voters in the Parkview School District approved operation referendums in 2014 and 2017. Another operation referendum on last week’s ballot failed to pass.
School district of Janesville voters approved an operational referendum in 2020 which expires in the 2024-2025 school year.
