The Beloit Police Department released their 2022 crime stats, and violent crimes saw a significant drop last year.
Assistant Chief Thomas Stigler says shots fired incidents were down 52%, gunshot victims went down 86%, homicides dropped by 25%, and robberies saw a 10% decrease in 2022.
Stigler says an increase in traffic stops was a helping factor in the decrease in violent crime, as criminals stay mobile and move from crime to home and crime to crime via vehicle, and violent crimes go down when police are more visible.
Police in Beloit performed more than 6,200 traffic stops in 2022, up from 3,517 in 2021.
