The Rock County Public Health Department is urging owners of private wells to have their water tested for high levels of nitrates.
Environmental Health director Rick Wietersen says approximately 25 percent of Rock County wells have tested above the health advisory level.
Wietersen says the State of Wisconsin and Rock County both have funding programs available to help private well owners mitigate high levels of nitrates.
The Wisconsin Well Compensation Program will provide up to $16,000 for well replacement, and the Rock County Nitrate Well Testing and Mitigation Program offers free installation of a point-of-use reverse osmosis treatment system for wells.
