A long time crossing guard with the Janesville School District has hung it up after nearly two decades of service.
Patricia Fleming says she initially took the job just to make a little extra money, but it turned into more as she loved helping different generations of kids over the course of 17 years.
Fleming says she would strongly recommend someone apply to be a crossing guard, as the money is good and you’re able to form bonds with the kids; but they’ll need to remember to dress for the weather.
Fleming says she didn’t want to retire, but after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year, she felt it was time to put up the vest and stop sign at her crossing at Milton Avenue and Memorial Drive.
