GIFTs shelter receivers grant money for solar project

Grant funding through the Solar for Good program is helping the GIFTs men’s shelter in Janesville put solar paneling on their roof.
Director of Community Relations Tracy Schroeder says having the solar panels will allow them to lower expenses, which will in turn allow them to hire more staff and put more money towards programming at the shelter.
Executive Director MaryAnn Raash says GIFTs spends about $9,000 a month on electricity, and with electric rates expected to increase, adding the solar panels will save them about $45,000 a year.
The shelter is looking at starting work in spring of 2024 and wrapped up by summer of that year.
