Beloit Police will be participating in a state funded bicycle and pedestrian safety grant for the next month and half.
Sergeant Brandon Jones says there were more than thirteen hundred pedestrians and nearly 700 bicyclists who were involved in motor vehicle crashes across the state during 2022, so the goal of the grant is to lower pedestrian and bicycle accidents.
Jones says the effort is not about stopping, citing, or arresting motorists; but instead is aimed to educate the public and ideally save lives.
Jones says as part of the initiative, officers will be utilized on bicycles, in patrol vehicles, and at cross walks to educate residents and discourage dangerous driving behavior.
The department will be taking part in the grant until the end of August.
