Lions Beach closed until further notice

After a test this week showed elevated E. coli bacteria levels, the city of Janesville has had to close Lions Beach for the foreseeable future.

Recreation Director Shelley Slapak says any test result between 0 and 250 colony forming units is safe for swimming, results between 250 and 1,000 are safe for swimming but require a warning, and anything over 1,000 requires the area to be closed.

A release by the city says the beach’s most recent water quality test showed a level of more than fourteen hundred colony forming units in the swimming area, and the beach has to be closed until testing shows lower results.

Slapak says they perform weekly tests, and they’re hoping the test performed Thursday will show lowered levels.
