UW – Whitewater and MercyHealth are holding their annual emergency response training Wednesday morning, with a large focus on preparing for cardiac events in athletes.
MercyHealth Athletic Training Supervisor Danielle Koran says identifying an issue right away and responding to it right away with the proper equipment can make the difference between life and death.
Koran says it’s crucial for coaches to be CPR, first aid, and AED trained because at the college level there will be multiple trainers to respond to an incident, but at the high school level coaches may need to step in and assist.
Derek Gray, a standout UW Whitewater basketball player, collapsed and later passed away last summer due to a cardiac related event.
