A local representative is trying to make it safer for newborn babies to be surrendered.
Ellen Schutt of Clinton says her new bill would allow a municipality to install a newborn infant safety device at a hospital, fire station, or law enforcement building.
Schutt says with the current law’s in-person requirement does sometimes stop people from safely surrendering babies because they might know someone at the hospital or fire station and feel uncomfortable.
In March of this year, a newborn baby was left in a field in Whitewater. According to the criminal complaint, the mother admitted to leaving
the baby because of fear of losing her other children due to the nature of her pregnancy.
