A policy change allowing the Beloit Public Works Division to take over final approval of the city’s Memorial Bench and Tree program from the city council and plan commission heads back to the drawing board.
Council Member Kevin Leavy says he likes the program itself, but struggled with the idea that anybody or any organization could potentially put up a memorial that doesn’t align with the morals of the city itself.
Council Member Markese Terrell says he wants more transparency and public input on the process since the memorials will be put on city owned, public land that members of the community will have to see on daily basis.
Public Works Director Bill Frisbee will now bring a new policy involving more public input to the council at their October 2nd meeting.
