Janesville Fire Department could see some extra city cash slide its way to help run fire department employees through needed paramedic training.

Deputy Fire Chief John McManus says Janesville’s Fire Department is not shorthanded on paramedics, at least not now. But some recent hires have come aboard without paramedic certification, and the process of training and certifying them for paramedic duty takes those firefighters out of the picture.

McManus says the extra city funding — 166,000 dollars worth — would mainly offset overtime costs for JFD staff to cover extra shifts while other crews are away in paramedic training.

The extra funding is being earmarked in the pending city budget.
