Janesville’s Fire Chief is set to retire this upcoming spring.
The city announced in a release Thursday afternoon that James Ponkauskas will retire at the end of May of 2024 after 30 years of service with the Janesville Fire Department.
Ponkauskas first started as a firefighter and paramedic with the Janevsille Fire Department in 1994 and held numerous roles and titles before becoming the department’s 38th Fire Chief in September of 2021.
According to a release, the Janesville Police and Fire commission is working on a process to the name the next Fire Chief by May of 2024.
